Survey for Outside Directors and Trustees
Mr. CEO: how would you feel if 93% of your outside directors and trustees rated you Very Good on the following: "My CEO is a patient and focused listener, asks intelligent and relevant questions in problem-definition and encourages appropriate input from others." Would you feel you had a partnership with the Board, that they were also key players in the enterprise and a valuable resource to you? What if 87% rated you as Needs Improvement ? Would it be important if you knew that, while you were not perfect, your directors, as a group, were operating under a misconception? Would it be valuable to clear up the misunderstanding? What if you suspected that while you had many strong leadership traits, you always seemed too short of time for focused listening and inviting the input from others. In other words, you agreed with your board. And you have learned that they, as a group, are right? If the partnership is working properly, there is likely to be a resource on the board who was or is also a hard-charging driver, who might be of assistance with this issue without weakening your role as CEO.
