Professional Development Planner (PDP)

One of the things we hire a lawyer, accountant, commercial insurance agent or banker for is to ask the tough questions.

"Asking tough questions" is the conduct of a character we call the "Analytic." These are the natural skeptics who insist on proof and evidence.

As managers, they are not typically approachable because they tend to be "efficient with the use of language" (i.e., blunt).

That same behavior makes all but a few Analytics uncomfortable with "practice development." "Practice development" sounds a lot like "sales," and that's not what they went to law school (or whatever) for.

PDP is a tool used by the managing professional to manage and build the junior professional.

Here are some features of Omnia's PDP:

· Every three months (or more or less frequently as desired) the Young Professional receives an e-mail notice/form that will be used for a self-evaluation.

Clearly "billable hours" are listed here, but other practice development activities are listed as well.

And the self-evaluation also deals with professionalism, quality of work, helpfulness, initiative, dedication, continuing education, etc.

The Young Professional also lists his prior year's income by component and lists his expected new year income by component, linking it closely to practice development for new clients, client retention and billable hours.

Note that the Managing Professional has not been disturbed during this process.

· When the Young Professional files his or her self-evaluation in the web site, the Managing Professional is alerted and the Managing Professional is then asked to evaluate the Young Professional. The Managing Professional does not see the Young Professional's self-evaluation at this time.

· When the Managing Professional files his evaluation of the Young Professional, the Managing Professional then sees a report showing both evaluations and a third column for a final evaluation following a dialogue.

In this way, Omnia PDP saves everyone time, gets the evaluation done and allows the Young and Managing Professional to focus on differences in evaluation and remedial action to be taken.

Partnership has more than a legal definition here.
